What was the first album you ever bought… ?
Well, As some folks may know, for some reason this is an often asked question, my first album was a choice between Sly and the Stones Greatest Hits and the Beach Boy’s Endless Summer greatest hits collection. It was very agonizing, I couldn’t afford both, a lot of hits on both albums I wanted, but I went with the Beach Boys.
What was the first concert you attended?
My first concert was Heart, and the opener was Robert Palmer. He had that one hit, [singing] I know you like, duh duh duh duh, you like it on top duh duh duh duh.
Can you tell us anything about Trainwreck’s creative process in writing new material?
Basically, there’s sort of two teams at work… there’s me and JR “Darryl”, and me and Lance, but mostly it’s been JR and me pretty much kicking it out. It’s not really an exact science, just ideas and chords and stuff. JR’s actually come in with a few songs pretty much done, but we’d help him out with the music pretty much. Basically, I’m pretty much the lynch pin, creative supervisor so to speak.
Do you have any good psycho fan stories?
They definitely come around. The thing I notice about them is how similar the psycho fans can be, it’s almost like they went to psycho fan school or something. They usually have the same weird glazed look and kind of get in your face a little bit. But the only one I can think of is the mother-daughter team, they followed us to the hotel and wanted some mother-daughter action. The mom was missing some teeth and I think the girl was about 16. It just didn’t feel quite right… didn’t feel quite right.
Since Tenacious D is the greatest band on earth… where would you say Trainwreck rates?
Well, Jack Black told me recently, and he’s told people this before, he says “if you like Tenacious D, you’ll like Trainwreck”. I didn’t know if it’s a complement or a diss, but I think it’s a complement.
What are your top five favorite albums of all time?
I think the White Album would be in there for sure, I think our album Tenacious D, I’m actually going to reserve a slot for Trainwreck, and I think Bon Jovi’s Greatest Hits cause really there’s so many great hits on there, and... I’m gonna take Jagged Little Pill [laughs]. |
