We're still working. Jack and I have been making alterations to the script and addressing various notes. Basically just tightening things up and taking it back into the garage for a tune-up before the race.  We're really close to finishing and then we'll be setting up shoot dates.

We've been working on keeping this true to the lore of the D.... We're trying to keep the love that people have for the HBO episodes as well as take advantage of the fact that it's a MOVIE. There should be surprises and hopefully a lot of gut busting. It's difficult because people want it to be like things they already know... but they want it to be something new at the same time. It's a difficult balance. It has to feel familiar and new at the same time. We think we've got that now.  Besides the scenes having to feel right and the progression from familiar things to new ones balancing... there are also some fucking rad new songs involved and musical scenes that I wish you guys could hear. As Jack would say "fuck-a-luck-a-ding-dong"!

Here's what has taken so long.... Jack and I wrote the treatment.... New Line loved it. They said "Let's make a deal!". Then the lawyers came in and started lawyering...  and it took them ONE YEAR AND ONE MONTH to come to an agreement!!! ouch. During that time, Jack and I wrote the full script and even had time for one revision. The deal was done a year later... we handed over the first draft of the script and everyone loved it. We got notes back from various people (some just friends that we wanted input from) and then went back in for a little tweaking. We sort of took everyone's notes and made a big list of things we felt were good ideas or helped the story and then went in and started making little changes here and there.

Then School of Rock came out. Jack and I wrote the "Step Off" song together for one of the scenes... The amount of press Jack has had to endure is totally fucked up. We are nearly finished with the script but during the last months... the movie keeps endlessly releasing in new countries and interrupting us. Jack is home and we work two days... then he has to go to the UK for 10 days... he comes back and we start to work for two or three days... then he has to go to Australia... then back and then to Europe. Currently, he's in Tokyo doing press. Thank goodness that this is the LAST trip. No more School of Rock press! Finally.

So when he returns in a few days we will wrap up the script (only one more scene to work on)... and we are ready to start putting gears in motion for the shoot date. This should happen fairly soon afterwards. So D fans please be patient. We're doing this stuff ourselves and it's real... we want it to be kickass. We are almost there and in production. Red Hour Films, (Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld) have been super supportive and helpful through all these various processes. We're all excited and (though it may seem to be taking forever) we're on track and schedule. It's happening.

I want folks to know that just because I'm co-writing and directing the movie... it doesn't mean it's going to be over-the-top vulgar or gross. I think people really misunderstand the short films I did that appear on the DVD set (that I worked on for 10 months to get to the fans... and thankfully the DVD has gone quadruple platinum. So thanks to everyone.) The shorts that I made were from the live show and were made for a live show setting... they were made as performance pieces and needed to be over-the-top to pull the audience together. Because they were made for a rock show...(not a movie theater) a lot of people are pumped up or fucked up... and so the over-the-top gross outs were truly just to get everyone at the same time to say  "UGH!". Nothing more.  Keep in mind the other stuff that I did on the DVD: the live show editing, the on the road documentary, the videos, the making of's, the short films and even the easter egg (I wrote and directed the fake tampon commercial with the mother and daughter... which IS gross but hopefully funny). I do a variety of things in different styles and I hope you guys will trust me on this one

Besides the movie... all D fans should say their prayers and keep their cockles crossed for another exciting possibility... there is a SLIGHT chance we may be able to make a D Xbox game because of this. This is not confirmed... Jack and I did take one of our earlier scripts though and transform it into a video game outline. That would be super exciting for us, being huge gamers... and I hope you guys would be into playing a little "double team" too. Just imagine how awesome all the sound bytes would be as you're playing... hearing JB yell "FUCK!"  as his character is getting hurt. Would be so funny.

Rock.

Liam

Hello everyone,
I've been getting a lot of requests and emails about what I'm currently working on... so here ya' go.   For the last 12 weeks I've been in pre-production on the Tenacious D movie, "Tenacious D in The Pick Of Destiny", which I co-write and will be directing for New Line.   It's been some serious hard work. Sort of the hardest and funnest thing I've ever done all at once. We started shooting on the movie last week and so for the next 50 days I'll be shooting the movie, followed by 25 weeks of post work, where I'll be editing, working in the studio with the guys for additional backing music, doing sound design work and visual effects. I'm scheduled to be working every day until the second week of February 2006! eeks. It's been a mind blowing experience. The D and I have been working on this for 3 and a half years now and it's insane that it's all happening around me now. It's a totally intense reality compared to 4 years ago when Jack and I would be playing Xbox and saying "Dude... you know what would be rad... if we ..". Now we're doing all those things for real. This movie is such a brain-load for me and I've been breathing, eating and sleeping Tenacious D for several months. It's 24/7 D-Time. We're all super psyched for everyone to see this film and hear all the new songs. It's going to be great. During the process of shooting my best friend Rob Schrab will be making internet behind-the-scenes movies that will be posted on line every week or so. These will most likely be up on the tenacious d website. Check in a few weeks and you can watch some of the fun while we are shooting our epic adventure. Rob is going to make the internet diaires really fun too... so you guys should definitely enjoy.   I'll post again later and let you guys know how it's all going.

January 2004 - update from Joe

It has recently been confirmed that Tenacious D is planning on hitting the silver screen.  In an interview with Q magazine JB anounced the upcoming movie's title: Tenacious D: In the Pick of Destiny.  It will be directed by Liam Lynch, who also directed the video for "Tribute" and the clips shown at the D's concerts (Butt Baby, JB's BJ, and Rock Star Sperm Bank).

The film is being produced by JB's longtime colaborator Ben Stiller's Red Hour Films and Working Title Films which produced High Fidelity.  The first draft of the script was written by Scott Aukerman and B.J Porter, who were also writers for the HBO show.  However, after careful consideration the D decided that only they could capture the true escence of the D.  So JB, KG and Liam Lynch all sat down together and began writting. Six movie treatments later, they finally finished their masterpiece.

According to Liam, "It's going to shake the pillars of hell with it's radness" but when asked of the details of the plot, Liam would only say that it is a secret that  "no mortal could handle the thought of".  However, he has revealled two things: one, that the film will tell the story of how the D came to be, and two, that the film will showcase brand new songs from the D!  The sound track to the movie is very likely to be the follow up to the D's first album.

The executive producers of the HBO show (Bob Odenkirk and David Cross) will be involved in the film.  And yes, if you were wondering, it has also been confirmed that the D's right hand man and "webmaster"
Lee will have a role in the film.  So far it is rumored that Meat Loaf will be playing JB's father, Jack Black will be playing his own mother, and Will Ferrell will be playing a music shop dude. Filming begins this summer at a secret location under the cover of night.
