He was kind enough to give us the full scoop on the movie: why it's taking so long, where it's going, and get this... there's talk of possibly making Tenacious D the video game!!! __________________________________________________________________ [From Liam Lynch] We're still working. Jack and I have been making alterations to the script and addressing various notes. Basically just tightening things up and taking it back into the garage for a tune-up before the race. We're really close to finishing and then we'll be setting up shoot dates. We've been working on keeping this true to the lore of the D.... We're trying to keep the love that people have for the HBO episodes as well as take advantage of the fact that it's a MOVIE. There should be surprises and hopefully a lot of gut busting. It's difficult because people want it to be like things they already know... but they want it to be something new at the same time. It's a difficult balance. It has to feel familiar and new at the same time. We think we've got that now. Besides the scenes having to feel right and the progression from familiar things to new ones balancing... there are also some fucking rad new songs involved and musical scenes that I wish you guys could hear. As Jack would say "fuck-a-luck-a-ding-dong"! Here's what has taken so long.... Jack and I wrote the treatment.... New Line loved it. They said "Let's make a deal!". Then the lawyers came in and started lawyering... and it took them ONE YEAR AND ONE MONTH to come to an agreement!!! ouch. During that time, Jack and I wrote the full script and even had time for one revision. The deal was done a year later... we handed over the first draft of the script and everyone loved it. We got notes back from various people (some just friends that we wanted input from) and then went back in for a little tweaking. We sort of took everyone's notes and made a big list of things we felt were good ideas or helped the story and then went in and started making little changes here and there. Then School of Rock came out. Jack and I wrote the "Step Off" song together for one of the scenes... The amount of press Jack has had to endure is totally fucked up. We are nearly finished with the script but during the last months... the movie keeps endlessly releasing in new countries and interrupting us. Jack is home and we work two days... then he has to go to the UK for 10 days... he comes back and we start to work for two or three days... then he has to go to Australia... then back and then to Europe. Currently, he's in Tokyo doing press. Thank goodness that this is the LAST trip. No more School of Rock press! Finally. So when he returns in a few days we will wrap up the script (only one more scene to work on)... and we are ready to start putting gears in motion for the shoot date. This should happen fairly soon afterwards. So D fans please be patient. We're doing this stuff ourselves and it's real... we want it to be kickass. We are almost there and in production. Red Hour Films, (Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld) have been super supportive and helpful through all these various processes. We're all excited and (though it may seem to be taking forever) we're on track and schedule. It's happening. I want folks to know that just because I'm co-writing and directing the movie... it doesn't mean it's going to be over-the-top vulgar or gross. I think people really misunderstand the short films I did that appear on the DVD set (that I worked on for 10 months to get to the fans... and thankfully the DVD has gone quadruple platinum. So thanks to everyone.) The shorts that I made were from the live show and were made for a live show setting... they were made as performance pieces and needed to be over-the-top to pull the audience together. Because they were made for a rock show...(not a movie theater) a lot of people are pumped up or fucked up... and so the over-the-top gross outs were truly just to get everyone at the same time to say "UGH!". Nothing more. Keep in mind the other stuff that I did on the DVD: the live show editing, the on the road documentary, the videos, the making of's, the short films and even the easter egg (I wrote and directed the fake tampon commercial with the mother and daughter... which IS gross but hopefully funny). I do a variety of things in different styles and I hope you guys will trust me on this one Besides the movie... all D fans should say their prayers and keep their cockles crossed for another exciting possibility... there is a SLIGHT chance we may be able to make a D Xbox game because of this. This is not confirmed... Jack and I did take one of our earlier scripts though and transform it into a video game outline. That would be super exciting for us, being huge gamers... and I hope you guys would be into playing a little "double team" too. Just imagine how awesome all the sound bytes would be as you're playing... hearing JB yell "FUCK!" as his character is getting hurt. Would be so funny. Rock.
